Shower Drain

A shower drain is the fitting set into the shower floor that collects water during use and channels it through a P-trap into the drain-waste system. Unlike sink or tub drains, a shower drain must handle relatively high flow rates — a standard showerhead delivers 2–2.5 GPM — and must integrate waterproof with the shower pan or tile system surrounding it.

Types of shower drains

  • Standard round drain (clamping type): the classic shower drain, used with a rubber membrane liner or PVC pan. The drain body has a clamping ring that compresses the liner between the body and a top clamping ring, forming a watertight seal. Standard 2-inch drain pipe connection.
  • Square drain: a square-format version of the standard drain, common in modern tile shower designs where the square grate aligns with tile patterns.
  • Linear drain (channel drain): a long, narrow drain along one wall of the shower — used in barrier-free (zero-threshold) shower designs and contemporary tile work where the floor slopes entirely toward one side rather than a center drain. Requires careful planning for the sloped floor installation.
  • Foam-base (tile-ready) drain: a drain body integrated into a pre-sloped foam substrate — the drain and slope are one assembly, simplifying custom tile shower installation.

Hair and debris clogging

Shower drains are the most frequently clogged drain in the home. Hair, soap scum, and shampoo residue accumulate in the drain strainer and trap. A drain hair catcher (a flat strainer over the drain opening) dramatically reduces clogging. Clean the strainer weekly; snake the trap annually or when flow noticeably slows.

Shower drain rough-in

Shower drains require a 2-inch drain pipe (minimum), properly vented, with the drain center positioned to align with the shower pan drain opening. Standard rough-in depth for shower drains is 0–3 inches below finished floor level depending on the drain type. Incorrect rough-in depth is a common cause of drain installation problems during shower remodels.
