Rooter

Reference photograph: Rooter (A motorized drain cleaning machine that uses a spinning steel cable with a cutti).

A rooter (also called a drain rooter, power auger, or electric drain snake) is a motorized machine that feeds a flexible steel cable through a drain pipe while spinning it at high speed. Cutting heads or spiral attachments at the cable tip break up blockages, cut through tree roots, and remove accumulated debris. The term "rooter" comes from the original use case — cutting tree roots that infiltrate sewer pipes.

How a rooter works

The rooter machine holds a drum (or spool) of stiff but flexible ¼"–⅝" steel cable. An electric motor spins the cable continuously. The plumber feeds the spinning cable into the drain through a cleanout or drain opening, advancing it until it reaches the blockage. The spinning cutting head breaks up or hooks the obstruction. When the cable is withdrawn, it pulls debris out or leaves it broken into pieces small enough to flush down the line.

Cable and attachment types

  • Spiral/corkscrew: general-purpose head for soft clogs (hair, paper, grease accumulations)
  • Saw blade / root cutter: a circular or bladed head that cuts through tree roots infiltrating sewer pipes
  • Spade/arrow head: used for piercing through compacted debris or cutting soft root masses
  • Retrieving/hook: for pulling out solid objects like wipes masses or toys

Rooter vs. hydrojetter

A rooter mechanically breaks up blockages but doesn't necessarily clean pipe walls thoroughly. It's faster and less expensive. Hydrojetting uses high-pressure water to scour pipe walls completely — better for grease-coated pipes and for ensuring roots are fully removed rather than just punctured. For recurring root problems, a rooter clears the immediate blockage; hydrojetting combined with a sewer camera inspection identifies whether pipe repair or lining (CIPP) is the long-term solution.
